Dr. Gilligan, born in Boston, MA, studied at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, acquired, within seven years, both his Bachelor of Science and his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation in 1984, he practiced in South Dakota for one and a half years before moving to Wisconsin.
Under his guidance, the North Lake Veterinary Clinic has grown from its humble beginnings in 1988, to a state of the art practice and facility. Continuing education and staff development have been priorities for Dr. Gilligan. His interests in veterinary medicine are varied: he enjoys the medical challenges of a general practice, and his surgical interests include soft tissue surgery as well as selected orthopedic procedures.
Service to the community and the profession has also been a focus for Dr. Gilligan. He has coached numerous youth athletic teams, volunteered with the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs, served as past president and was a founding member of the North Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, and acts as ad hoc chair of a Thanksgiving volunteer group. He has also served on the board of directors of the Humane Animal Welfare Society and is on the board of directors of Wildlife in Need.
Professionally Dr. Gilligan is a past president of the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association and the Waukesha Veterinary Medical Association. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Under his leadership North Lake Veterinary Clinic has been certified as a “Feline Friendly Practice.”
Dr. Gilligan has two sons: Colin, who graduated West Point in 2011 and is now a helicopter pilot for the Army. He is currently deployed overseas. Sean attends UW Milwaukee and will be studying abroad in Ireland in the spring of 2018. Dr. Gilligan’s interests outside of work are snowboarding, mountain biking and traveling Wisconsin roads on his Harley. He is a member of the National Ski Patrol at Little Switzerland and the Wisconsin Bike Patrol for mountain bike races throughout Southeast Wisconsin. And of course playing with Riddle and Ponder, his Coon Hound Mix dogs. The boys gets to come to work every day with Dr. Gilligan; please feel free to ask to meet them!
